Creating the next generation of computing experiences? Talked to AMD lately?
Ever worked inside a tech start-up? The energy and excitement for the art of the possible through technology innovation is infectious. Similarly, tech-oriented venture capitalist firms and investors see the art of the possible and embrace their roles as incubators, enablers – and ultimately profiteers – from the process of bringing new technology experiences and businesses to life.
That same infectious energy can be felt from the employees of AMD at our campuses around the world and here in Taipei following the first public demonstration of an AMD Fusion™ APU today at Computex, signifying an important step towards next-generation computing capabilities. But that’s not all – we’d be nothing without our ecosystem partners who are building new experiences with Fusion as the foundation, so I’m pleased to announce that today AMD also launched the AMD Fusion Fund. The Fusion Fund is a program geared towards initiating strategic investments in ecosystem companies who are poised to take advantage of the upcoming AMD Fusion family of Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) products. As of today, ecosystem companies and entrepreneurs are invited to submit proposals and business plans to be reviewed and considered by AMD and its business partners.
By investing in our current and potential business partners, we hope to further advance and accelerate the development of AMD Fusion APU-enabled applications and form factors so mainstream users will have next-generation technologies at their fingertips as quickly as possible. In addition to the work already ongoing with our partners, the Fusion Fund is an important part of realizing the vision of Fusion as the industry enters an era of visually immersive, accelerated computing. Fusion APUs have the potential to enable breakthroughs in visual computing, performance-per-watt and device form factor. It is the goal of the Fusion Fund to set up a win-win for AMD, the industry, and PC users by funneling resources into ecosystem innovation.
Here’s a quick summary of the AMD Fusion Fund:
- We want to reward innovation. It’s the lifeblood of our company and the foundation on which the computing industry is built. With that in mind, projects we would consider might include a range of next-generation and accelerated computing solutions designed to work with AMD Fusion APU products, including application software and tool development, unique device designs or PC components.
- The more the merrier. We’ve opened the submission to a variety of potential business partners like start-ups, entrepreneurs, software tool and design firms, original design manufacturers (ODMs) and component companies.
- Visit this website for more information on how to submit an innovative proposal.

Will it also be used to give grants to univ research labs?
Hi Rahul, thanks for the interest in the Fusion Fund. While the Fusion Fund is not intended for funding university research, AMD does support university research through other means. The Fusion Fund is in place to help entrepreuneurs, start-ups and small to medium sized companies drive hardware and software innovations that benefit from, or are partly made possible by, Fusion APUs.
Can you tell us how can we apply for Fusion related university fund? Typically we would be interested in having a test system. I’m interested in benchmarking and characterizing the performance of the fusion chip.
I agree with the previous two comments. As a university professor, I want to teach and do research on the state-of-the-art processor techniques. I have been looking forward to AMD Fusion when its plan was announced. Kindly let me know how I can get the APU.
