What Women Want

by Leslie Sobon

I like lists. My life is one big list: what I have to do (finish this blog); what I want to do (go on a safari); and what someone else better do (feed the cat when I’m away…please).

So here’s my list of 10 universal truths about women and their personal computers:

  1. Women appreciate cash: earning it, marrying it, spending it. Some of us even know what cache is in a PC, but technical jargon is not effective in getting any of us to buy one.
  2. We like black shoes and little black dresses. Black computers…notsomuch.
  3. We don’t like buying a PC. It’s just not fun. Visit Barneys or go on zappos.com, and you’ll see the purchasing experience we like.
  4. We want our PC to reflect our lifestyle and the ongoing quest for beauty, entertainment and efficient time management.
  5. One PC does not fit all women. We don’t all “Facebook” and scrapbook. Many of us make movies, play hard core games, build our own computer and can hit a curve ball.
  6. When we want a new computer, we listen to our friends and read user reviews. Benchmarks are like online dating – the truth is not always quite as advertised.
  7. Women neither buy PCs because of the sticker or cars because of the cold weather package. We buy in spite of them.
  8. We want a PC that’s easy to use. Not because we’re computer illiterate. Because we’re busy.
  9. Women are not special. We don’t require special help in finding a PC, a special website or special ‘pink’ marketing. We just want to know if this PC (1) does what we want it to do and (2) fits within our budget.
  10. We buy a lot – a lot — of PCs. In 2009, American women accounted for 66% PCs sold. (Source: Compiled by Marketing to Women Conference, 2009)

It’s back-to-school time and there are some fantastic PCs available that appeal to what women want: to see, create and share digital memories; to build websites; to play games, to watch sports – always with great style and at prices that make sense.

Here are a few of my favorites:

  1. HP Pavilion dm1z 11.6"

    HP Pavilion dm1z 11.6", starting at $449.99 on HP.com

  2. The Sony VAIO VPCEE23FX 15.5" laptop available at Walmart

  3. Toshiba T234D-S1345 13.3" Laptop

  4. Dell Inspiron 501R 15.6" Laptop

  5. HP Pavilion dv6-3025dx 15.6" multimedia notebook

I would love to hear from women about anything else you might want from your PC and to answer any questions you may have.  And, guys, what do you think the women in your life want from a PC?

That same M2W Conference article states that in 2009, American women accounted for 91% of new homes sold in addition to 66% of PCs sold. What is their definition of “accounted for” with these statistics? Does it mean by exclusivity that only 9% of new homes (and 34% of PCs) were “accounted for” by men? How did they count sales where both a man and a woman participated and signed, which I believe is still the most prevalent mortgage in the country?

@Buddy Fey: You see a man and a woman buying a new home together. When do you see a man and a woman buying a new PC together?

I think that 66% basically says that women are no less likely to buy a PC than men. The difference (extra 16%) probably come from some parents buying PCs for their kids using the wife’s credit card. Apparently it more than offsets the cases where the husband/boyfriend buys a PC for his wife/girlfriend.
