Groovy Candy Coated Notebooks

by Leslie Sobon

I was recently in Milan and while I just missed Fashion Week by a few days, I have to say, wow, the 70’s are back and back big. (Say YES to flare jeans!)

Not only are we witnessing this 70’s come-back in fashion, but notebook computers are finally getting their groove on – looking less like a gas station and more like a psychedelic candy shop. Bring. It. On.

As someone who has spent too long in this industry surrounded by utilitarian-colored electronics: PCs, phones, cameras…I dig anything close to fuchsia or teal or – I don’t know – pale yellow. Really, people. Any other color.

And now we can get them all around the world – lots of choices. Here are some of the coolest in power, touch, and far out colors.

BURNT ORANGE

First up is a little mega-mobile notebook, the Toshiba NB550D. It plays all your HD movies and videos, games, and has fantastic Harman-Kardon speakers. This is the notebook size – 10 inch – the PC industry has been calling netbook because it couldn’t do all the stuff notebooks could. Not any more, thanks to AMD’s Low Power Fusion. Now these mobile devices are simply mini notebooks for highly mobile – and colorful – people. And this little beauty comes in lots of other colors too: indigo blue, lime green, and copper.

OLIVE GREEN

At less than three pounds Acer Aspire One A0522 is another highly portable, 10 inch notebook designed for smoothly streaming internet video and watching favorite videos in HD, thanks to AMD Radeon™ HD 6250 discrete-class graphics.

CANDY APPLE RED

The Fujitsu Lifebook PH-521 is an ultrathin PC – 11.6 inch. This is my favorite notebook size because I can use it for business as well as fun. With an ultrathin you can create and consume – and still stay mobile. And this stunning Fujitsu has a superfine HD back-light LED display (1366×768 pixels) so every inch of this PC is truly brilliant.

 PINK COTTON CANDY

Ahh, the dreaded Pink (not the singer; she’s great). Some women literally cringe at this color. I get it. It’s the one hue on the color wheel that screams “I’m a girl” and assumes all the stereotypes that go with it. But I’ve been in tech so long looking at black and grey boxes, I relish pink. Someone give me purple. No, wait. Tie-dye!

The Sony VAIO YB is pretty in pink. It’s another ultrathin (11.6”) so you can still do all you work stuff (if you want), but have a cool notebook for creating and sharing digital memories that fits in your matching pink Gucci. And starting at around $500, you can buy it and still afford the Gucci.

Is color the most important thing? Of course not. But these brilliant colors make PCs fun. And the PC needs an infusion of fun, in whatever flavor.  Of course, you should expect that same brilliance when you use your PC, whether streaming videos, playing games, or editing photos. And with AMD AllDay™ Power, you can leave the cord at home.

Let the new “Psychedelic PC” era begin!

But please, whatever you do, don’t bring back green shag rugs. No one needs those.

 GIRL GEEKS UNITE

I would like to personally thank the Girl Geeks of Milan. While visiting last week, I was fortunate to be asked to speak at one of their Girl Geek Dinners.  I had the opportunity to share my passion for AMD Fusion and all it delivers to PCs and tablets to a group of women passionate about technology.  Thank you Girl Geeks!

I’m holding out for PCs with joss-stick holders and tie-dye chassis, which play Voodoo Chile when you start them up.

I could really see my girlfriend infront of that Fujitsu Lifebook PH-521!
