We’re gearing up for a yearlong celebration of AMD’s 40th anniversary – and we hope you’ll help us celebrate. Forty years ago this May, Jerry Sanders and the gang of seven set up shop in Sunnyvale, CA with $100,000.
Just ten years later, AMD was operating its own cutting-edge manufacturing facilities in Austin and entering the big leagues with a listing on the New York Stock Exchange. Over these forty years AMD has transformed from a second source supplier for IBM to an x86 fast-follower and, today, to a recognized innovation leader that has made an enduring, positive impact on IT.
Our anniversary Web page has a great timeline of AMD’s history of innovation, and I urge you to explore that.
But the best is yet to come.
By any measure, the AMD of 2009 is a very different company than the one that came to be forty years ago – and that’s a good thing. Like any wise 40 year-old, we’ve been exercising and reinvesting in ourselves. And while, yes, these are challenging economic times, AMD continues to drive innovation in the industry with new technologies and platforms that are designed for where the industry is heading – designed for how you use computing in your daily life:
- Like our Yukon platform for ultrathin laptops, which is helping to usher in a new era of computing;
- And our ATI Mobility RadeonTM HD 4000 series graphics processors that deliver a home theatre-quality HD multimedia experience on your HD monitor;
- And our most energy efficient AMD OpteronTM processor ever to hit the market – a processor that is an ideal cloud computing platform.
Now onto the fun stuff!
AMD has never been an orthodox business, and true to form we are not celebrating our 40th in a traditional way: instead of receiving presents we are giving them! Because we would not be turning 40 without you, our loyal customers – from the IT manager who goes against the grain by shaking up the server mix in a Fortune 500 company to the gaming enthusiast who knows the best experience is on a system powered by AMD chips and ATI graphics.
To “thank you” for your support over the years, today we are rolling-out a series of contests that we plan to run throughout the year, enabling our fans to connect in fun ways with us – and one another – not to mention a chance to win some AMD (and AMD-powered) products.
The first contest will call on the enthusiast community to use their creativity to deliver videos and photos of their AMD gear. I can’t wait to see what you come up with. Stop by the anniversary site regularly to see submissions and be a part of the action.
Maybe I’ll even submit my own video…
Note: Pat Moorhead, AMD’s VP of Advanced Marketing, has some quite passionate thoughts of his own about our 40th anniversary here.

*gets out my party hat*
I think it’s neat to look at everything AMD has done over the years and very exciting to look at current projects and future ideas. Since I bought my first K5 processor back in the late 90’s to my current Phenom 9850 x4.. AMD has always been my chip of choice for every build. (and I’ve done a lot)
Thanks everyone!

I hope AMD will success and bring the more advanced solutions like initiative by your former CEO Hector Ruiz about X86 EVERYWHERE. I think in the future there are many AMD products in different form like large Flat Panel TV with X86 computing using AMD Platform (This is possible!!!), handheld (with future AMD chips at lower TDP, and set top box equipped with all possible internet connections (WIMAX or 4G, WIFI, Cable modem, DSL, Dial up modem, (I hope to be more slim than current HTPC form factor).

Ok, I’ve been a huge fan of AMD and their products for years. Every PC I’ve bought or built since I first heard of AMD has had an AMD processor. Great support, great architecture and lots of terrific innovation. But… Right now, I’ve been hearing about the new ATI XPT for months, anything from “coming soon” to “unveiled” to “released”. I’m really beginning to wonder, because I’ve switched from desktop PCs to notebooks, and I’d really, really like to have an XGP, but they seem to be vapor-ware. Have they been released for sale yet, and if so, where can I buy one?
Thanks,
Dan

Dan – thanks for your question about the ATI XGP. If you live in Europe, you can obtain one today from Fujitsu-Siemens as the Amilo Graphics Booster, and we hope to make this ATI part more widely available soon.

Nigel,
What AMD has accomplished in the last 40 years is amazing. AMD has experienced great growth in terms of its product offering, product range, international position and recognition, and competitive position against Intel. While shopping for components to build my gaming PCs, I for one am more than happy and proud to do things such as explain to anyone the difference between the true quad core Phenom X4 processor and Intel’s “quad” core (which is still basically a dual core), or the advantages of ATI cards over NVIDIA’s. I only wish I could celebrate AMD’s anniversary as an AMD employee. It has been my desire for the last 5 years to join the AMD team in a marketing or international business position, and have applied for numerous positions to no avail. Hence, if you ever get a little time, ask to pull my profile from your HR database, and then consider allowing me the pleasure of participating in AMD’s continued growth for at least the next 20 years!
Cheers,
Gary A. Dolch
