I agree, where is the HD3xxx support? I have a 2400 that does H264 acceleration and the HD3xxx is more of the same. They have both been pumping out and accelerating high bitrate Bluray in my house for a couple of years, taking on a 3-4mbit H264 stream should be easy.

I'm incredibly surprised that the ATI Radeon HD 3xxx standalone graphics cards are not supported. Seems like a major oversight and wonder if ATI plans on including support for a cards that are not old by any stretch.

Think about all the people with AGP Radeon HD 3xxx series cards which could benefit from a little extra horsepower with accelerated flash being offloaded to the GPU. They would probably benefit the most from this technology being their CPU's are not that powerful to begin with.

I like the specifics of the deal ~ when I first read the article summary from a different sight, it looked like it was all about the money.

I like how the 'inducements' are prohibited ~ and I hope that Intel won't find other nasty ways to take away from AMD's market share.

I simply can't understand a technological reason why the 3xxx IGP is supported here and cards like the HD3870 are not. There is a massive disconnect imo.

I would like to be educated on this, please do help me out on this one.

- Is this GPGPU using the general purpose shadders to accelerate part of the decoding, along with the CPU for CABAC part of video decoding?

- Is the decoding it self not accelerated at all, but only the image filters like resize, denoising, etc?

- Or it is mainly pipelining the video data to the dedicated logic in the UVD for decoding H.264, hardly using any other part of the GPU at all?

Please clarify. Also, when 64bit linux users will have this also?

"it should not be confused with proprietary APIs (and by “proprietary” I mean supported by only one supplier’s hardware)"

Yea, Like all open APIs I'm sure you can get DirectComute in any color you want as long as it's black. It may be agnostic to DirectX 11 spec hardware, but I'm guessing it's "supported by only one supplier's operating system". Sorry Mac users, it may as well be greek to you. The "de-facto industry standard" is locked on the MS platform.

It's great that AMD has options of sourcing.
But AMD needs to be truely objective in using SOI. Is SOI still justified for its higher production cost (not just wafer cost) and single source of GF?

BBC broadcasting Top Gear in HD is the final straw for me. My favourite programme cannot be watched on my media server because my 3850 card makes it un-watchable. I am going to have to buy an Nvidia which annoys me greatly since this has been known and discussed on the forums for months.

Are you sure AMD will give up its share in GLOBALFOUNDRIRS? I think it is better if AMD still have an interest in GLOBALFOUNDRIES as a shareholder. I think as a customer of GLOBALFOUNDRIES, AMD could do with additional capital to GLOBALFOUNDRIES based on achivements and performance progress. If GLOBALFOUNDRIES could roll out 32 nm SOI High K process for AMD ahead of schedule or matured its process earlier than expected, GLOBALFOUNDRIES can be awarded by AMD with capital addition between 500 million to 1 billion dollars if upcoming AMD products could beat the competition.

If you want peace - get ready for war,and/or
hope for the best and prepare for the worst. :)
I personally don't put a lot of faith in dealing with
the "blue devil"..As soon as they realize Fusion
is A64's second coming they'll be forcing the MFD's
down OEM's "throats" and screwing product launches.
2010 needs to be a year of global market penetration for AMD - to secure the (big) 2011.

Thanks for the update. AMD is wisely managed since Hector gave up and that's very reassuring after years of beating. The GF initiative was very smart indeed. No question about it. This settlement is another masterpiece of management's efficiency. Something to be proud of, even though 1.25B$ looks quite low compared to the really arm. The five years agreement is surely the best part of the deal. No mention the recognition AMD get from this very unusual Intel's move.

+1 to the "throw AMD hardware in the bin" camp. I specifically purchased a motherboard with onboard amd HD, i've since had to disable the onboard and replace it with an Nvidia card due to the issues listed above. I gave up waiting for an acknowledgement from AMD that there was a problem with their hardware......
Regardless of whether you fix this or not, i'll never buy another AMD product again as you make me MAD.

Ok, let's have 2P (at least, but heck, why not 4P) in reach of the enthusiast?

There might be a chicken and egg situation with multithreaded software, but that won't be the case for long.

I'd like to see opterons for 4P more reasonably priced
the Istanbul 2427 is £356 here, and the 8435 is £2,080.
I understand a certain price premium, but nearly 6x is surely going to hurt take-up.
A 4P server must use less power than 4 1P servers, or even 2x2P servers, but if you have to pay £6400 more, you're going to think twice.

Also it would be great to see the CPUs and their memory on HTX3 daughterboards, and GPU HTX daughterboards, too.

This is a space where AMD could really be unbeaten, so how about it?

add me to the list of dissatisfied customers regarding the h264 issue. I had to go out and buy an *vidia card. Why can't you reply to customers?

Before reaching this agreement, AMD should have considered what Intel would have done to AMD had the positions in the anti-competition case been reversed. Intel's legal department would have been absolutely ruthless with the aim of maximising compensation and if necessary would have put AMD out of business. This is what AMD should been aiming to do to Intel.
