Evaluate and Innovate?
Posted by Nigel Dessau in 10:36 AM
For some broad thoughts on AMD’s approach to marketing, particularly social media and other cost-effective ways (say, a blog!) to reach our audiences, please take a moment and read this Q&A that B2B Magazine was kind enough to publish online as their “CMO Close Up.” While their audience tends to be marketing types like me, your response to the Q&A would be a great check for me on whether you agree we’re being smart about reaching, well, you.
I look forward to reading your comments.

1000 Yammering on – Part 2
Posted by Nigel Dessau in 8:58 AM
I received a couple of questions about my blog on Yammer and thought the best approach would be to answer them – with another blog.
Bryan Bartow commented: If internal adoption and use of Yammer continues, will AMD at some point have to consider implementing an "in house" solution? I’ve always thought micro-blogging tools such as Yammer, Presen.ly, Twitter, etc. could be very valuable in the enterprise. However, the danger in using such "hosted" tools is that the data, and therefore knowledge, is owned by the provider and not the enterprise. How much, if any, was this a concern when deciding to use Yammer at AMD?
Actually we are looking at in-house solution that we could keep within the firewall – more on that later.
Keith McCarty also commented: It is great to see such amazing adoption of Yammer by AMD employees. What were the key drivers of this amazing rate of adoption? What are some of the ways AMD is utilizing Yammer to improve communication and overall productivity? We are very interested in talking with you and some members of your team, to get some product feedback, suggestions, and answer any questions you may have. Also, if there is anything AMD needs, to help further the adoption of Yammer, we would love to help facilitate that process.
Lots of questions but some thoughts:
- People had already started to join Yammer on their own; you must have a good thing.
- We host a quarterly Worldcast, an all employee webcast, and in our most recent we encouraged employees to use Yammer to comment and ask questions – as long as within our Yammer usage guidelines. That has helped drive adoption.
- What we were surprised about was how many ‘groups’ have been created and are now flourishing. I joined three – including a movie one – gotta love those film reviews.
If you want to know more, send me an email and I will connect you to our team. As ever, I am nigel.dessau@amd.com

Over 1000 Yammering On
Posted by Nigel Dessau in 4:21 AM
We have been embracing “social media” for some time now, exploring how it can help us get our message out. Like many of you, we have been testing the waters externally for the last few years. YouTube is a particularly useful, if noisy, community.
But more recently we have been using the technology internally – and to that end we now have more than 1100 of the global AMD team on Yammer. The number seems to grow by about 10+ each hour at this point. It’s fun to watch how this tool is helping the worldwide team start to connect in new ways, create new groups and otherwise extend our Fusion strategy.
We got the team interested originally when Sarah Lacy (on Twitter @sarahcuda) visited us while on her book tour. You can watch the interview on YouTube. If you are considering getting into social media, Sarah or someone like her is a great way to get people engaged.
And while on Twitter, you can follow AMD via @AMD_Unprocessed, @PatrickMoorhead, @JTRex, @IanMcNaughton and me @legin.
You can also find more AMD video at AMD Unprocessed.
