Do you regularly update your graphics drivers?

Hot on the heels of the ATI Radeon™ HD 4890 launch complete with astounding reception from journalists, customers, gamers and winning over 40 awards to date, Terry Makedon and his team have a Catalyst update to launch as well!  The ATI Catalyst™ 9.3 driver was only released 22 days ago, so don’t expect a lot of optimizations, but the driver team has built in a few goodies for ATI Catalyst 9.4 that are worth the update.

[NOTE:  Some readers took advantage of my last blog to raise some driver support issues  - I wanted to remind readers that this blog is not meant as a driver support page, and ALL driver support issues should be communicated through the proper channels so we can capture them correctly and fix the issues. So please report all driver related issues here.  I am happy to read and comment on some of them that you feel are relevant to this blog, but no support will be given via this blog, sadly I am not a driver engineer!]

Marketing sound bite: ATI Catalyst™ 9.4 - New ATI OverDrive™ auto-tuning application*

ATI Catalyst 9.4 includes a new ATI Overdrive™ auto-tune application finds over-clocked engine and memory values for ATI Overdrive supported ATI Radeon™ Graphics accelerators. This new added support is designed for the ATI Radeon™ HD 4000 Series of GPUs.

We work hard to deliver the best platform solutions that consist of CPU and GPU. As the only company in the industry that can deliver both we have the unique opportunity to develop free software to optimize performance across AMD-based platforms.

I don’t think we say enough about our gaming software, here are links to download all of our recent applications:

Some of the other notable highlights in ATI Catalyst 9.4 are that this driver is optimized for the upcoming highly anticipated game The Chronicles of Riddick – Assault on Dark Athena. Catalyst 9.4 also supports the new ATI Radeon™ HD 4890 as well as fixes a load of bugs; please check out the release notes for full details.

And last but surely not least, my favorite community: ATI Catalyst™ 9.4 for Linux

We will have support (once the driver is available on or about April 17th) for new operating systems:

  • RHEL 5.3 production support
  • Ubuntu 9.04 early look support

So, what does this all really mean to you, the gamer?  It is further commitment to the enthusiast community that overclock or want the ability to tweak their systems.*  That is, you own an AMD processor and an ATI Radeon GPU, you will be enabled to have a superior PC experience with our gaming software products, and of course, if you are a Linux user, a broader set of platform support.

See you next month!

Cheers!

Ian “Cabrtosr” McNaughton

Wow, the release has come quickly !
I was wondering if, over the new linux distributions support, some bugs could have been fixed for ubuntu 8.10 … didn’t see anything in the release notes though.
Anyway, hope for vsync options in video playback so much ….

    Thanks for your article !

How come there is no support for Ati Radeon X1000 cards & below in this new Catalyst ?? It is not fair for everybody that still using older cards

While I wasn’t one of the people submitting support requests on your blog, thanks for the link. Now if you could just point out where on that page I need to go to submit a support request, because I’ve been searching for the last hour (the 9.4 package crashes during installation).

But Ian, it’s about time to change Catalyst installer wallpaper! :)

Last month I read a comment in the OpenGL.org press release for OpenGL 3.1. Suki Samra from AMD said that their next driver release would support OpenGL 3.1. How about that? It isn’t mentioned anywhere? When will we see that? And what about OpenCL support? Would be great to have that at hands as well!

Anyway: keep up the good work!

Will the driver support previous versions of RHEL? Got a 4 box I will want to use it on.

Great job! It’s good that thse drivers are released quite often. The auto-tune feature is useless, though. Also, noticed that these pages are iPhone friendly.

    • #14 by Ian McNaughton - April 9th, 2009 at 10:04

@Anon – Have you used the Auto-tune feature extensively? I like it as a tool personally. As for mobile app friendly, this blog was posted via my Blackberry Bold while I was on my way to a meeting.

My main interest is WoW under Wine. Tell me Ian… Does 9.4 fix the problems Catalyst has had in the past with WoW under Wine? I’m getting ready to upgrade my systems and I sure would like to make it an AMD clean sweep.

Unfortunately the performance in Second Life is even worse on Catalyst 9.4, not only do I get an explosion of triangles like in Cat 9.3 but frame rates are severely impacted. I was getting 40FPS with the Catalyst 9.1 drivers but with Catalyst 9.3 and 9.4 I’m getting severe triangle glitches and terrible performance.

You can view our Jira reports here
    http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-4335
    http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-11874

I didn’t test this with Cat 9.2 but I can imagine the results will be the same, I don’t know what changed between Cat 9.1 to Cat 9.3 but there sure is something wrong with compatibility with Second Life and the Cat 9.3 & 9.4 drivers.

Also as I mentioned Catalyst 9.1 doesn’t exhibit this issue.

And one more thing. Fallout 3 on XP during the Operation Anchorage content VPU recovers every 4-5 steps I take in-game with all Catalyst drivers since 9.1

  10. #18 by Papoulka - April 9th, 2009 at 23:10

I appreciate ATI keeping so up-to-date with their drivers now. What I don’t like is you hiding a World of Warcraft demo in every installation. This is simply a slap in the face (worse, but that’s graphic enough). If I want WOW on my PC I will knowingly put it there!! And I don’t! And I don’t want to have to remember every time to go to custom installation and un-check that. Dammit!

It’s obviously hidden because you figure that everyone else feels the same way. So….

  11. #19 by Nate Supplee - April 10th, 2009 at 09:36

Ian, what kind of gains in performance are you seeing going from 9.3 to 9.4? Is it notable?

Hopefully I will have time to install it tonight (running a 4870 1 gig), I will post if I find some improvements.

  12. #20 by Rui - April 10th, 2009 at 13:08

OMG, this 9.4 package STILL has no AVIVO for Vista X64!!! What are you guys thinking about? You missed that part for 9.3 and now the same thing?

I am tired of reading “it will be available soon”

Please, release the AVIVO package for Vista 64!!!!

  13. #21 by DTech - April 10th, 2009 at 13:43

I am not seeing a ton of performance upgrades from this. However, it is really tough to tell either way. I would still recommend that people try it though

  14. #22 by Ian McNaughton - April 10th, 2009 at 17:48

We invented the concept of mobile drivers with the introduction of Catalyst Mobility many years ago. However we fell into roadblocks with OEM’s not permitting us to update drivers for their users. In essence we were limited to provide drivers only for non major OEM laptops. We are very interested in providing updated drivers to our users (as evidenced by our industry leading commitment to monthly driver updates). At this point we will have to talk to our OEM’s and find out why they gave permission to Nvidia to do this. We are very excited with the possibility of providing Catalyst to our mobile users if it is possible, but in the meantime checkout mobility modder found on driverheaven.net

    • #24 by Forged - April 11th, 2009 at 17:43

@Alan Kerr, No problems here. Try uninstalling your driver and rebooting before installing the new one…

Powerplay bug has been present for about 5400 versions now. WHEN THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO START SUPPORTING X2 CARDS, ATI?! Christ!

    • #26 by Ian McNaughton - April 17th, 2009 at 10:27

@Alan Kerr – We have not had other reports of this issue, F@H should work fine in Cat 9.4 – are you still having issues after an uninstall and reinstall?

  16. #27 by Ray Marden - April 11th, 2009 at 16:52

Too bad absolutely nothing has been done regarding the driver conflicts with simultaneous 2D and 3D applications and the driver halting the 3D application.

I hopped to the ATI side of things about three months back and it has been a big regret on my end. The card performs very well, but it wreaks havoc on my windowed browsing, video playing, and gaming. Seriously, every time I have to close and restart a 3D application, it just reinforces the negative stereotype regarding ATI’s drivers.

Given that ATI and Nvidia cards are basically equal these days, until you fix this issue, you are actively pushing me to go Nvidia in the next round. As ever – for all these years now – your driver support is still fairly bad.

  17. #28 by Rui - April 11th, 2009 at 17:46

Hey Dr. Ian. Would please tell me whether there will be AVIVO for Vista 64 this time?

    • #29 by buzzword - April 12th, 2009 at 16:04

      How about Avivo for x64????

I’m on the verge of switching to Nvidia for CUDA support alone since ATI seems to be going nowhere with Avivo on x64.

      • #30 by Ian McNaughton - April 17th, 2009 at 10:20

@buzzword – It is coming soon.

  20. #36 by ron foreman - April 12th, 2009 at 08:34

I just bought the radeon 4890xoc card. Even though this card is already overclocked, the 9.4 catalyst software is missing one critical feature —- fan speed control, either manual or programmed. As it stands, the fan speed response is inadequate to provide optimum cooling, with game response suffering. Your version 9.4 software only supports direct fan control with gpu’s that can be overclocked. You need to provide some software means to increase fan efficiency and allow user control of temperatures. do you have any plans to do this, or do you have an alternate suggestion?

    thanks
    ron

    • #37 by Ziv - April 15th, 2009 at 17:27

      @ron foreman,
one word for you (which is actually two words connected :P )
      rivatuner,
      look it up on google.

      • #38 by Hun73r - April 27th, 2009 at 13:49

        @Ziv,

i have rivatuner, in and in crossfire it keeps forgetting the fan settings with every reboot

so a build in fan controller in driver can only be better.

    • #39 by Ian McNaughton - April 17th, 2009 at 10:22

@ron foreman – THanks, I have passed on your suggestion to engineering.

  21. #40 by Dale Kay - April 12th, 2009 at 08:41

Yeah I’d like to confirm the problems with Second Life with 9.3 and 9.4 on both HD4670 and HD3200. The quickfix for the triangles is to disable VBO (Vertex Buffer Objects) in SL – but expect a performance hit because of this. You can claw this back slightly with a search for a modded Cool Life viewer, but it is still a waste of your graphics memory.

ATI/AMD need to address this urgently – Second Life is a massively popular game and since the viewer is basically open source I don’t see the problem in making sure the drivers conform with it. Many people are reporting better framerates with mid range Nvidia cards than high end ATI’s and this cannot be good for AMD’s fortunes if it is not resolved quickly.

Another issue is that 9.4 support for the HD 3200 present on many laptops is claimed but actually silently fails to install anything (except WoW :)

  22. #42 by Hun73r - April 12th, 2009 at 17:34

Those drivers a crap i lost about 11% speen in alle games and tha same bug a there over and over.

And how about making crossfire useable they suck totaly right now and stop releasing new cards we aint even using then other we have more than 50% due to crapy games and even more crapy drivers….

  23. #44 by Artem - April 12th, 2009 at 23:03

Hello Ian McNaughton! How long you will support Windows XP?

    • #45 by Ian McNaughton - April 17th, 2009 at 10:19

@Artem – Great question. This decision rests with Terry and the driver team, they are constantly weighing the options for legacy GPU support, games, and OS’s. I can’t answer your question directly, but please ping Terry Makedon on Twitter if you want to hear what he has to say.

ian, your post #14, dude, don’t sweat it, i’ve tried both their so-called beta drivers for nvidia cards on my lappy(hp dv5) for 9600m gt.
don’t work 20% as well as the oem drivers, fire off a scathing comment everyday to their notebook complains page….
btw have 4850hd in my main home pc, on windows 7, you guys rock, changed back to radeon after only five months in the green camp(8600gt). phew!!!
    couldn’t be more relieved…
if i wasn’t a believer in the concept of competition(oligopolic, but, whatever) i would swear off nvidia forever…
but i want both camps to work harder, btw did i tell you, you guys rock, 9.3-9.4 in just 22 days..honestly!!
nvidia haven’t got one workable driver for win 7, or notebooks…

    • #47 by Ian McNaughton - April 17th, 2009 at 10:14

Dear Ian Can you confirm that the ATI 9.3 driver (which is installed) may be the last driver I can install on my machine? I have Win xp 32 bit, sp3 and the ATI Radeon Xpress series. Like many others, I am unable to load the ATI 9.4 driver, it reports no suitable hardware or drivers are available.

    Thanks for any info.

    Mr McNaughton:

I’m also wondering about when will we have AVIVO support under Vista 64. I think it is not ATI’s fault for not implementing it yet, but for not informing us, long term ATI users, what to expect.

    Any word in that regard?

    Many thanks,

    Cristián

    • #57 by Ian McNaughton - April 17th, 2009 at 09:55

@Cristian – I spoke to the internal team responsible for AVIVO and the plan is still to support Vista 64 with AVIVO and the timeline is “sometime soon”. As it is a roadmap feature I am not allowed to talk about specific timelines publically.

just bought radeon hd4890 oc, i’m going to replace my nvidia geforce 8800 gtx, i have vista 64. I know i have to uninstall old nvidia driver first, but i would like to know the best way to install rhe driver for hd 4890, should i install the one from the cd that came with hd 4890, or should i download the latest driver from the graphics manufacturer and install it (which is catalyst 9.2) or should i download the latest driver from AMD website which is catalyst 9.4?

    • #59 by Ian McNaughton - April 17th, 2009 at 09:45

When will AMD support other linux distro like Mandriva officially ?
Also playing HD videos in Linux with pre 9.4 lags and hangs quite a times… Compiz/Kwin is slow and playing video is not good with composite on…

  35. #71 by FA_Crazy-Canuck - April 21st, 2009 at 20:22

I have rolled back to 9.1. I found 9.2-9.4 gave me a drop in performance in IL2 and Lock On Flamming Cliffs, both opengl games. I find that 9.1 performs better in this case.
Is there a plan to improve performance in OpenGL games?

    Hello Ian.

It is already the 22nd of April.

By the time of next Friday, it will be May. I still can’t see any sign of the AVIVO X64 package you promised.

I can understand that ATI is giving up older cards’ driver support. However, I feel bad that you guys are giving up the support of X64 operating system.

  38. #74 by Aquineas - April 24th, 2009 at 08:40

Do you foresee the eventual ability for the IGP on the GX motherboards to be used for OpenCL, Stream, and Havok Physics acceleration in the case where an individual already has a high end stand alone graphics card? If the answer is yes, then I’ll root for your favorite football team… Well, so long as they’re not playing the Bears.

If this update is so fantastic, can you please tell me why I am getting the reboot BSOD on a fresh Vista 32bit SP1 install???

  40. #76 by Jalil - April 26th, 2009 at 11:13

I have been a long time fan since the past All in Wonder cards of about eight years ago. I never had any problems installing your drivers in XP.

I recently updated to Vista 32 bit, and I was running the 9.3 drivers in XP with no problems. As soon as I hit Vista 32 bit, I am receiving constant driver errors where the display driver would install but the CCC component would not. I then rolled back to older drivers, and the errors continue.

I was directed to the support department, and I have spent a total of five hours in the last week or more with every proposed solution that was provided by your support team to update the drivers successfully. Now, 9.4 still doesn’t work and neither do the other previous versions.

Why is this happening with the install of the driver update 9.4. I am pretty sure everyone can install the display driver, but the catalyst control center does not install; this still doesn’t work even with the link provided by support which they say would install it but had and does not install.

Can we all be wrong? Could it be that there is something in your driver package which is not properly implemented (i.e. program error, defect…).

    5400+ Black Edition CPU
MSI K-9 Platinum 580x Crossfire board
    ATI 4870 Graphics
    Vista 32 Bit

Any solutions for the masses who continue to have these issues with these drivers, particularly the 9.4?

  41. #77 by Matt - April 27th, 2009 at 00:17

9.4 totally destroyed my games. By that, I mean within the same hour I updated to this driver my computer started to randomly shut down while trying to play some games. While in others the graphics are very much screwed over. The worst case of artifacts and overall hiccups came from the game “Second Life”. Which is now unplayable due to everything in the world just randomly exploding into odd shapes and rainbow colors. This is the worst driver I’ve ever downloaded for my Radeon HD 4670 and I am very disapointed. This was more like a downgrade 100 times over.

  42. #78 by Rui - April 29th, 2009 at 22:38

    April 29th, now.

WHERE IS THE AVIVO 64 PACKAGE YOU PROMISE?

  43. #79 by Kitsune - May 2nd, 2009 at 14:27

Why is it saying that it’s SUCCESFULLY INSTALLED,
even when i look at the LOG, it says SUCCESS!
but when i look at my drivers and catalyst after the reboot, none has changed! i also tried uninstalling driver and catalyst and install a fresh 9.4, but nothing! no drivers! Got frustrated…
    i have HD3200 at 780G mobo…
I REALLY HOPE THEY FIX THIS IN 9.5 CATALYST AND DO NOT STOP THE SUPPORT FOR HD3200..
coz ill be completely mad at AMD and ATI if ever this happens… im beginning to like NVidia now…

  44. #80 by Dan - May 5th, 2009 at 22:02

AVIVO transcoding support was one of my main reasons I upgraded recently. It’s very disappointing to find out there’s no 64bit package.

You must have some sort of plans/schedules – can’t you even give us a rough date that you’re aiming for? Even a beta version to test or something?

Why the AVIVO Video settings in Catalyst 9.4 (8.612) are disabled? Only BOB method deinterlacing is available (I need Vector Adaptive). My video card is 4870×2 on Windows 7 RC1 64-bit.

I don’t have any performance qualms, as I am trying to install the drivers for a business PC. What I’m surprised at is that AMD is not using standard Windows Installer setups for the drivers. Yes, MSI’s are embedded in the Setup.exe and are used, but from an IT perspective, it is impossible to install these drivers unattended. Yes, there is the /UNATTENDED_INSTALL switch, but, in CCC release 8.5, there were options to pass the video resolution into the driver installer. This seems to have disappeared in the 8.6 release of CCC (which is contained in the 9.4 version of Catalyst). I tried the /PASS_TO_CORE switch with /PASS_TO_CORE:”-h 1280 -v 1024 -b 32 -j ddc”, but the setup doesn’t even start. In fact, interactively, I get an error that causes Catalyst setup to exit.

Secondly, Catalyst 9.4 doesn’t include HydraVision, but does include a trial of WarCraft. Why would I want this installed as a business? I managed to take the old setup installer provided with CCC 8.5 (which included HydraVision) and replace the Packages\Drivers folder with the Catalyst 9.4 Packages\Drivers folder and which incuded the Packages\Apps\Hydra folder. This works.

Here’s the real problem: if I run the following, interactively, the installation works. Setup.exe /UNATTENDED_INSTALL /FORCE_HIDE_FIRST_RUN /FORCE_CLOSE_WHEN_DONE /MESSAGE_ON_REBOOT:NO. However, in this driver series, there is no way to stop the driver from changing the video resolution to 800×600 on first reboot. This is stupid. Why can’t the driver use the resolution that Windows was using prior to driver installation?

Now, when I try to run that command from a Windows Script (I’m using the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2008 to deploy Vista x64), the command gets executed, but nothing installs.

All around, this driver pack is terrible for IT unattended remote installations. I have been scouring the ‘net for documentation because AMD doesn’t have anything on the support website. The documentation that comes with the driver is just as useless.

Is it possible to install this driver unattended and specify the video resolution once installation has been completed? Is there a guide available for download? If not, is there a way to manually repackage these drivers for remote unattended install?

Your help would be greatly appreciated, even if it is only pointing me to other (appropriate and helpful) information, as the existing command line switches are not working for me.

    Thanks.

@Craig Shea, I fogot to mention that the other inclusion in the 8.5 CCC installation was the EnableAero.msi that told windows to perform the Windows Experience Score performance tests. This is also missing from Catalyst 9.4 (unless it’s hidden/folded into some other installation routine within 9.4). However, I don’t believe that to be the case because when I ran the original 9.4 package, the experience score was not updated. Again, from an IT perspective, I’d like to have this done automatically.

      Regards,

      Craig.

nice drivers, they work perfectly with my hd4670. Catalyst is a light software, easy to use, that’s why i only own ATI cards ;)

Anyway, what about the catalyst 9.5 ? ^^

What will be the new features or game optimizations?

    see u

OK, I reneg a little on the comment that this installer sucks for IT.

What’s annoying is that AMD supplys a Setup.exe in the root driver package. This “setup wrapper” does not support the video resolution switches. It seems all Setup.exe does is forward the command line switches/options to the \Bin{64}\InstallManagerApp.exe installer, which does support the video resolution switches I found somewhere on the web. Why AMD does not document these things is beyond me?!

My last gripe regarding Catalyst install is that it detects a newer installation of Catalyst during the setup and asks if you want to upgrade. This occurs even when you specify the /FORCE_HIDE_FIRST_RUN (which merely bypasses the language selection screen), so in reality, this installer really is not silent or unattended. Maybe I need to pass the -install switch to InstallManagerApp? Can anyone confirm? If I can get this driver to completely install unattended, that would be great!

    Regards,

    Craig.

      @Craig Shea,

I spoke too soon. The installation started with the video resolution switches specified, but when the computer rebooted, the video resolution was re-set to 800×600x16-color. What gives AMD?

In addition to the install not being totally silent, how do you get rid of the annoying “Register Me” popup at the end of the installation??

I don’t think AMD gets small businesses. Not everyone is an HP, you know.

      Regards,

      Craig.
