A friend of mine has a recent video card and found that many of his older video games couldnt play, in one case(KOTOR) the graphics were better but the game systematically crashed after a few minutes.

I have many older games myself which I still want to play, Ive checked their compatibility with Win 7(most can be played in a compatibility mode) but I had not considered the graphics card itself and its driver to be a source of problems(thinking games will run even better not worser), so I am wondering which cards (nvidia or ati radeon) are the most compatible with older games?
I was about to get a mobility Radeon HD 5640 but now Im wondering if that would be a headache to play old games?
Are there tools/drivers to enhance backwards compatibility?

BENCHMARKER : My Far Cry 2 hangs after playing some time and returns back to desktop.Besides the game experiences jerky motion in spite of having a good frame rate(around 40 fps) when all the settings are at their maximum and anti-aliasing set to 8x. system:CPU:AMD Phenom x3 8450 MB:M2NVM-HDMI RAM:4 GB ZION(800Mhz) Graphics:Radeon HD 4890(Sapphire) OS:Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 Driver:Catalyst 9.9

I’m having similar issue on HP8510p notebook with HD2600 card. New drivers for 64bit win 7 has some “overscan” value applied as default, but lacking user interface to change it (turn off). Result is black border on plasma screen. No problem in 32bit XP, vista or seven prerelease.
You can cry on ATI, HP or microsoft, but no one is responsible for sure…

EL PROBLEMA ES CON DIRECT 10 Y LOS CATALYST 9.9 , 9.10, 9.11, CUANDO HABILITO EL ANTIALIASING TENGO 2 ATI HD 4850 EN CROSSFIRE ( NO SE VEN LOS VIDEOS, SOBRE TODO LOS DE LA MITAD DEL JUEGO) OJALA QUE ATI SOLUCIONE ESTE PROBLEMA CON LOS CATALYST 9.8 NO PASABA ESTO PERO NO TENIA SOPORTE PARA CROSSFIRE.

I agree wholeheartedly the new interface is HORRIBLE*…WTF for the sake of good business GO BACK!!!!

*horrible as a word, does not give enough emphasis on how back@ssed the ‘new look’ is. Horrendous does even come close. Not even the phrase ‘worst decision ever’.

I only hope the AMD guys read this and take note, speakup when you know your implementing a stupid new look or feature…grow some balls or shame on you for not knowing…
