As many of you know, some months we focus on performance improvements much like you will see with the AMD Catalyst 11.8 Preview driver. Other months we focus on adding exciting features such as AMD Steady Video like you saw with the AMD Catalyst™ 11.6 driver.  However, this month we took a slightly different approach. Thanks to feedback from our community, we’ve focused on resolving some minor issues that have been reported.  We work tirelessly to continually improve our drivers, and here’s a look at the issues we’ve resolved in AMD Catalyst 11.7.

• Issues experienced with mouse cursor lag
• Log event (Event ID 62464) issues when playing video content
• System hangs seen in the AMD Catalyst™ 11.6 driver on specific HDMI and DP displays
• Blu-ray playback using PowerDVD 10 under High Performance mode no longer randomly displays a blank screen.
• Some Divx format files no longer display video corruption using WinDVD.
• AMD SteadyVideo is now applied to Home Video clips using WinDVD 10.
• Chequerboard corruption is no longer displayed intermittently when playing DirectX 10 titles in an AMD CrossFire™ technology configuration and AMD Eyefinity technology-enabled.
• Shogun II now renders the cinematics correctly when run in various Eyefinity configurations.
• Video playback now works correctly when Hardware acceleration is enabled with VLC Player version 1.1.9.
• AMD CrossFire technology now functions correctly when playing Hamilton’s Great Adventure.
• PowerDVD now correctly handles 3D Blu-ray content.

Now let’s talk about the AMD Catalyst™ 11.8 Preview Driver which most of you are probably excited to learn about.  With this preview of next month’s driver you are going to see some amazing performance improvements which are highlighted below.  You will also see how we are further enabling the 3D ecosystem by offering AMD HD3D technology support on some of the latest and greatest DisplayPort panels on the market.  

Here a few quick highlights of what you can expect to see with the AMD Catalyst™ 11.8 Preview driver.

• Enables AMD HD3D technology support on DisplayPort panels, such as Samsung 750 and 950 series 3D displays.
• Improves performance up to 13% in Crysis 2 DirectX 11 version  at 2560×1600 resolution and 4X Anti-Aliasing on the AMD Radeon™ HD 6870 GPU
• Improves performance up to 7% in Shotgun 2 – Total War at 2560×1600 resolution and 4X Anti-Aliasing on the AMD Radeon™ HD 6770 GPU
• Improves performance up to 13% in Call of Duty: Black Ops at 2560×1600 resolution and 4X Anti-Aliasing on the AMD Radeon™ HD 6770 GPU

Highlights of the AMD Catalyst™ 11.2 Windows release include:

New Features:

• AMD Catalyst AI Texture Filtering updates

o    The Quality setting has now been improved to match the High Quality setting in all respects but one; it enables an optimization that limits tri-linear anisotropic filtering to areas surrounding texture mipmap level transitions, while doing bilinear anisotropic filtering elsewhere.

This optimization offers a way to improve filtering performance without visibly affecting image quality

o    The Performance setting has been updated to address the sharpness of the default Quality setting causing shimmering in certain cases.  It now provides a smoother filtering option that eliminates most shimmering while preserving the improved detail provided by anisotropic filtering.

• Tessellation Controls

o    Supported on the ATI Radeon™ HD 5000 Series and the AMD Radeon™ HD 6000 Series

o    New settings give users full control over the Tessellation levels used in applications.

o    The default selection “AMD Optimized” setting is intended to set the best level of Tessellation on a per application basis.   The “AMD Optimized” setting is designed to help users get the maximum visual benefit of Tessellation, while minimizing the performance impact associated with enabling the Tessellation feature. Currently no applications have been profiled.

o   The “Use Application Settings” option gives applications full control over the Tessellation level.

o   Users can also manually set the maximum tessellation level used by applications with the slider control

• Morphological Anti-Aliasing support for the ATI Radeon™ HD 5000 Series GPUs

o    AMD Catalyst now includes official support for Morphological Anti-Aliasing for the ATI Radeon™ HD 5000 Series GPUs

Support Video Quality settings during Blu-ray 3D playback

• Supported on the AMD Radeon™ HD 6000 Series GPUs
• Requires Blu-ray 3D player software, 3D supported display and 3D Stereoscopic glasses
• Users can now enable the Video Quality settings within the Catalyst Control Center when playing Blu-ray 3D content

Here are examples of performance that we have noted in our labs.  Your results may vary depending on the model, screen resolution, anti-aliasing, and whether you are using AMD CrossfireX™ technology.

Battleforge™

• Performance increases up to 3% on ATI Radeon™ HD 5800 Series using single GPU and CrossFireX configurations with anti-aliasing disabled.

STALKER – Call of Pripyat™ benchmark:

• Performance increases up to 5% on ATI Radeon™ HD 5800 Series using single GPU and CrossFireX configurations.

Resolved issue highlights:

• Enabling AMD OverDrive^TM through the AMD Catalyst™ Control Center for single display systems no longer results in GPU clocks running at high levels in non-GPU intensive scenarios
• Mouse cursor no longer flickers and disappears in World of Warcraft when hardware cursor is enabled when playing in Stereo 3D mode
• Primary display no longer blanks out when playing World in Conflict Soviet Assault DX10 with Dual Monitor enabled in AMD CrossFireX™ mode
• AMD CrossFireX™ no longer becomes disabled in Battlefield Bad Company 2 after performing a task switch
• The “Contrast” value for the display is no longer set to zero after AMD CrossFireX™ is disabled for the first time
• Alien blood is now rendered properly in Aliens vs Predator with Anti-Aliasing enabled

Highlights of the AMD Catalyst™ driver for Linux^® release include:

• Invalid position values for specified size  with aticonfig are accepted and updated in xorg.conf
• Cursor unable to enter task bar area when certain rotations are applied
• Initial rotation results in Xserver crash during startup

We’ve also recently posted the AMD Catalyst 10.10e hotfix driver (AMD Radeon™ HD 6800 series users should use this driver; AMD Catalyst 10.12 will add full support for the AMD Radeon HD 6800 series next month):

There will now be two variants of the AMD Catalyst driver package available:

1. AMD Catalyst (same driver package as in previous versions):
   • Includes the Direct3D, OpenGL, Display driver and AMD Catalyst Control Center components
2. AMD Catalyst Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP) technology Edition:

We were really excited to announce to gamers that ATI Catalyst can now be updated directly from Valve’s Steam desktop client. Naturally, many of you had questions about how the process works and what to expect.  Working with Valve, we put together the following questions and answers to address some of your concerns. These FAQs are also available in Steam Support as well.

QUESTIONS:

• Do I need to take action for Steam to update my drivers?
• The AMD Installer froze, what should I do?
• Will I be able to roll back to a previous version of my drivers?
• Who do I contact if a new driver version isn’t working?
• Why am I being redirected to a webpage instead of receiving the driver directly?
• Will this work for notebooks with ATI Mobility Radeon™ drivers?
• Will ATI CrossFireX™ profiles get updated as well?
• Will I be able to download Hotfix driver releases on Steam?

ANSWERS:

DO I NEED TO TAKE ACTION FOR STEAM TO UPDATE MY DRIVERS?
Yes. To check for the latest video drivers, select ‘Update AMD Video Drivers’ from the ‘Steam’ menu at the top of your Steam client. Steam will check if any updates are available and then ask you if you’d like to install them.

THE AMD INSTALLER FROZE, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Please complete this guide and try the installer once more.

WILL I BE ABLE TO ROLL BACK TO A PREVIOUS VERSION OF MY DRIVERS?
Steam does not provide an option to roll your drivers back, but you can always manually install a previous version if you wish.

WHO DO I CONTACT IF A NEW DRIVER VERSION ISN’T WORKING?

WHY AM I BEING REDIRECTED TO A WEBPAGE INSTEAD OF RECEIVING THE DRIVER DIRECTLY?
If Steam does not have drivers for your specific video card, you will be redirected to a website where you can find the necessary drivers. We hope to be able to add support for more video cards in the future.

WILL THIS WORK FOR NOTEBOOKS WITH ATI MOBILITY RADEON DRIVERS?
ATI Mobility Radeon™ drivers are not currently being distributed through Steam™. Please follow the current update process by visiting AMD Support and follow the 5 steps.

WILL ATI CROSSFIRE X PROFILES GET UPDATED AS WELL?
ATI CrossFireX™ Application Profiles are not included in the Steam™ update at this time. The latest available profiles continue to be posted here.

WILL I BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD HOTFIX DRIVER RELEASES ON STEAM?
ATI Catalyst hotfix releases are not currently distributed through Steam. Please visit AMD Support to search for “hotfix” and the current ATI Catalyst release number.

  • Ubuntu 10.04 production support

ATI Eyefinity support

• ATI Catalyst™ driver for Linux 10.7 provides support for ATI Eyefinity technology under all supported Linux distributions
