Follow the AMD Radeon & Gaming Evolved team as they travel to San Diego Comic-Con 2011

What has about 160,000 heads, likes comic books, anime, movies, and TV shows? If you said, the attendees at this year’s Comic Con event in San Diego, you’d be right. The AMD Radeon™ and AMD Gaming Evolved team including @Jswinimer, @heatherjlennon, myself (@nCharms) and others in the PC gaming community will be in attendance at the Omni Hotel showcasing some of AMD’s coolest products. Comic Con has certainly seen a lot of changes since its early beginnings. While it still caters to the comic book fan — artists are aplenty — the show organizers realized that attendees are also keen on other entertainment and expanded the focus to include PC gaming, TV shows and Hollywood blockbusters. This year, AMD is sponsoring the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, and one lucky attendee will win one of the new AMD A-Series APU-based notebooks. Last year we met with our partners from BioWare/EA, and this year we’ll be doing the same; meeting with our gaming partners and connecting with gaming fans from across the globe. A major attraction will be Deus Ex: Human Revolution, slated for an 8.23.2011 arrival in North America, we’ll be showcasing the game using our AMD HD3D technology at the Omni Hotel, along with AMD Eyefinity technology and more! We’re really looking forward to Comic-Con 2011, there are lots of reports about the show on the web, but what the reports don’t capture is the experience of being at the show.

With 160,000 people plus in one place, you can imagine that it’s pretty crowded. Sidewalks overflow with attendees — some dressed like super heroes and other cartoon characters. On the show floor, you can barely move with wall-to-wall people. In addition to the show exhibits, vendors promote comic books from past and present along with golden age toys from long ago. We’ll be having a few giveaways as well as demos set up at the Omni Hotel so follow me and the @AMDRadeon (#AMDRadeon) team on Twitter for the latest up to the minute information on giveaways, parties and exhibits.

It’s that time again for the AMD Catalyst™ driver update! We have been getting great comments and feedback from the community because of this blog site. Please continue to send us your feedback as we do review them all*.

*IF you are having technical issues with the AMD Catalyst™ driver, or your graphics card please report your issues here.

As a note: this will be the last AMD Catalyst™ blog that I will write. I will be handing the reigns over to Chris Bell here at AMD who will carry on and keep you up to date on our driver postings. It has been a pleasure to keep you posted on all things AMD Catalyst™. I thank you for your feedback and comments over the past year.

Here is what is new this month!

Highlights of the AMD Catalyst™ 11.2 Windows release include:

New Features:

AMD Catalyst AI Texture Filtering updates

o The Quality setting has now been improved to match the High Quality setting in all respects but one; it enables an optimization that limits tri-linear anisotropic filtering to areas surrounding texture mipmap level transitions, while doing bilinear anisotropic filtering elsewhere.

This optimization offers a way to improve filtering performance without visibly affecting image quality

o The Performance setting has been updated to address the sharpness of the default Quality setting causing shimmering in certain cases. It now provides a smoother filtering option that eliminates most shimmering while preserving the improved detail provided by anisotropic filtering.

Tessellation Controls

o Supported on the ATI Radeon™ HD 5000 Series and the AMD Radeon™ HD 6000 Series

o New settings give users full control over the Tessellation levels used in applications.

o The default selection “AMD Optimized” setting is intended to set the best level of Tessellation on a per application basis. The “AMD Optimized” setting is designed to help users get the maximum visual benefit of Tessellation, while minimizing the performance impact associated with enabling the Tessellation feature. Currently no applications have been profiled.

o The “Use Application Settings” option gives applications full control over the Tessellation level.

o Users can also manually set the maximum tessellation level used by applications with the slider control

Morphological Anti-Aliasing support for the ATI Radeon™ HD 5000 Series GPUs

o AMD Catalyst now includes official support for Morphological Anti-Aliasing for the ATI Radeon™ HD 5000 Series GPUs

Support Video Quality settings during Blu-ray 3D playback

Supported on the AMD Radeon™ HD 6000 Series GPUs

Requires Blu-ray 3D player software, 3D supported display and 3D Stereoscopic glasses

Users can now enable the Video Quality settings within the Catalyst Control Center when playing Blu-ray 3D content

For more information on AMD Catalyst™ 11.2 (for Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Linux versions), including all of the resolved issues in this release, please see the AMD Catalyst™ 11.2 release notes.

This month, I’m back to give more insight into what the ATI Eyefinity Validated and ATI Eyefinity Ready experience can mean to you. Last time, I talked about ATI Eyefinity Validated and Ready software, and how having cutting edge software can showcase and enhance your game experience. In this final part, I want to talk about assembling the pieces into an affordable gaming and productivity rig. ATI Eyefinity technology can provide a boost to your productivity as well as enable incredible gaming immersion, all at an affordable price. You may already have some of the pieces you need today, but if you don’t, there are ATI Eyefinity Validated and Ready choices to help take the guesswork and confusion away.

You do not need multiple cards to enable ATI Eyefinity technnology, unlike competing multi-display solutions that require 2 cards be purchased. Also, you do not necessarily need to go out and purchase 3 or more new panels. Using active adapters and existing panels, (of a similar size that share a resolution) you can assemble an ATI Eyefinity configuration quite affordably. Let’s look at a few configurations that utilize existing panels, low-cost panels and recently released single-link active adapters.

Configuration 1: “I almost have everything I need”

Cost: Around $30 (assuming you already own: 3 panels and an ATI Radeon 5000 series card that supports ATI Eyefinity technology.

How: Utilizing recently released single-link active dongles, you can re-use existing monitors to extend gaming and productivity with ATI Eyefinity technology. Simply connect the panels to your card using at least 1 single-link DVI-to-DisplayPort adapter. Connect each panel to a DVI connector on your card and the third to the Single-Link DVI active adapter. Then connect your third panel to the adapter’s DVI or VGA output and you are good.

But what if you do not have spare panels? Do you need to buy DisplayPort™ capable panels? DisplayPort panels are becoming more and more available, but there is also an alternative. Using the above mentioned DisplayPort™ to Single-link DVI active adapter (around $30) you can purchase inexpensive LCD panels that do not have a DisplayPort connection.

Configuration 2: “Time to upgrade my panels”

Cost: Approximately $450

How: Buying 3 20” panels and 1 DisplayPort™ to SL-DVI Active adapter.20” panels have recently fallen in price dramatically, and you will likely find these available at multiple local retailers for the $130-160 range. Having 3 matching panels improves the aesthetics of the system and also gives you better color and geometry matching. For under $450.00 you should be able to purchase 3 new panels with DVI connectivity and the Single-Link DVI active adapter.

And what if you do not have an ATI Radeon HD 5000 series card with DisplayPort™ connectivity?

Configuration 3: “Time to upgrade my graphics card”

Cost: $600

How: By adding a new ATI Radeon™ HD 5750 card to the above configuration. If you do not have an ATI Radeon™ HD 5000 series card with DisplayPort™ connectivity then all is not lost. You can purchase an ATI Radeon™ HD5750 card online at a number of retailers and etailers for around $150. This card features enough performance for mainstream gamers in 3 x 1 Eyefinity landscape mode at a highly affordable price. For the cost of a gaming console and a handful of games you can have a widescreen gaming experience that is upgradable and affordable.

There are obviously a lot of choices when assembling an ATI Eyefinity gaming or productivity system. The above configurations are based upon what we think will work best for a mainstream gamer. If you are an enthusiast gamer then you may want to look at cards like the ATI Radeon™ HD 5800 series and if you want 6 display Eyefinity mode then the ATI Radeon™ HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition cards are your best bet. Similarly, panel size can make a big difference in your gaming experience. 24” panels continue to fall in price so considering these as an option may be in your best interest as well.

In conclusion, ATI Eyefinity Validated and Ready DisplayPort™ Active adapters combined with ATI Eyefinity Validated and Ready software titles will help you assemble a system without the guesswork. If you have your doubts, try it out! Many retailers are setting up demonstrations so users can see the difference, and if you can’t find it in a store near you use this simple online tool to get a feel for how games can become totally immersive. ATI Eyefinity technology is not just for enthusiasts. We want Eyefinity to be available to everyone!

1ATI Eyefinity technology works with games that support non-standard aspect ratios, which is required for panning across multiple displays. To enable more than two displays, additional panels with native DisplayPort™ connectors, and/or DisplayPort™ compliant active adapters to convert your monitor’s native input to your cards DisplayPort™ or Mini-DisplayPort™ connector(s), are required. ATI Eyefinity technology can support up to 6 displays using a single enabled ATI Radeon™ graphics card with Windows Vista or Windows 7 operating systems – the number of displays may vary by board design and you should confirm exact specifications with the applicable manufacturer before purchase. Systems using multiple ATI Radeon™ graphics cards can support a maximum of 8 displays (total across all cards in system) with a maximum 6 of those displays being used together in a display group (also known as a single large surface mode).

This month, I’m back to give more insight into what the ATI Eyefinity Ready and ATI Eyefinity Validated experience means to you.1 Last time, I talked about our mindset and methodology when testing hardware. Now, I will focus on software. Having cutting edge hardware features is only a benefit when software is there to take advantage of it. We understand this and we are working with developers to make this happen.

To ensure the best ATI Eyefinity technology experience, our teams have developed an SDK (Software Developers Kit) that makes it a lot easier for developers to take advantage of the incredible vistas and panoramas possible with ATI Eyefinity technology. Combine this with full DirectX® 11 support in our latest generation of graphics solutions and you get an incredible gaming experience. 2 So what can you expect and what do we test before we list a title as ATI Eyefinity Validated or Ready?

Through working with multiple groups including software developers, a focus group from the Widescreen Gaming Forums community and our own internal engineering teams, we created a list of key criteria that make a game stand out as ATI Eyefinity Validated or Ready. The current criteria are posted here, but let’s look at it in a little more detail:

- ATI Eyefinity technology resolutions must be supported within the game for ATI Eyefinity Validated status. ATI Eyefinity Ready titles may require an edit to the game file to expose the resolution. Having access to these resolutions is the first thing we test.

- In order to qualify as ATI Eyefinity Validated and Ready, we require a greater “Field of View” (“FOV”). You should be able to see more than what you could with a single panel: more of the world is visible or more content like menus or other game content is visible. This translates directly into a more immersive game experience.

“AR” or “Aspect Ratio” must be correct for the majority of the screen space. Some minor stretching of content on the side panels is acceptable but it should not be jarring or look like a funhouse mirror. Simply stretching the image across the displays is not acceptable. Neither is cropping the top and bottom off of the image to make it fit.

- “Cut Scenes” (such as in-game movies) must be presented fully within the visible area. We make sure that there is no cropping of content. Some stretching may be acceptable if it is minor and does not detract from game play.

- Game menus and dialog boxes must be visible and not rendered off the screen. Through the tools that we have made available to developers, placement of visual elements like menus, dialog boxes and HUD elements within an ATI Eyefinity-enabled multi-display FOV is easier than before. Ensuring that these elements are visible, usable and free of distortion or loss of aspect ratio is part of what ATI Eyefinity Validation and Ready testing is all about. We strive to help developers create immersive games that work well in ATI Eyefinity mode and help you, our valued customer, find these games. We currently have a listing of ATI Eyefinity Validated and Ready software posted at www.amd.com/eyefinity and that list is growing quickly.

In my next blog, I’ll give you an inside look into the overall benefits and “economic value” of setting up an ATI Eyefinity configuration. Using Validated and Ready components, you will be surprised how inexpensive it can be.

Stay tuned.

2 ATI Radeon™ graphics cards that support DirectX® 11 consist of graphics cards in the ATI Radeon™ HD 5900, HD 5800 and HD 5700 Series and the ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5800, HD 5700, HD 5600 and HD 5400 Series. Check with the manufacturer for specific support information.

My name is Bruce Gasson, I work in the technical group at AMD and I’m responsible for ATI Eyefinity Validated and Ready testing. Seven years ago, we launched our Certification Program to help improve the ‘End User Experience’ for our graphics cards. We look at everything, starting with packaging to make sure that the information is correct and easy to understand right up to the design of the graphics card itself.

In September of last year, we launched ATI Eyefinity technology1. This incredible technology allows you to game across multiple monitors as if they were one big seamless display. You have to see it in action to understand the impact that gaming at super wide aspect ratios has in creating a truly immersive experience.

It is simply fantastic how expanding your in-game field of view and opening up additional content can give you the feeling that you’re “in the game.” Imagine tearing down the track and seeing a car coming alongside trying to pass. What about rushing an objective while explosions tear-up the ground in your peripheral view? Simply breathtaking! Even “work” can benefit from ATI Eyefinity technology with added screen space and separate displays that save you a lot of window shuffling and minimizing.

So how do we test this hardware you ask? The ATI Eyefinity Validation and Ready testing process for hardware, focuses on how you are going to use the hardware. We still do signal integrity and other engineering tests, but we really focus in on the user experience.

We test the hardware to see if it works the way you, the user, are going to utilize it. For example, we test DisplayPort™ adapters on a variety of graphics cards, panels, and system configurations. Knowing that you may want to use the product at a variety of resolutions, we also test the hardware at several display resolution settings. We test graphics cards running games you play, in various ATI Eyefinity modes and check for visual issues – no scripts, no screen captures, minimal automation and maximum observation by human eyes. We look at the screens for things that you might experience. If all looks good to us, we list the adapter as being ATI Eyefinity Validated and Ready. If the adapter doesn’t pass muster, we work with the manufacturer or developer to address the issue or provide the information they need to get the product to a passing grade. Fundamentally it has to work and we take the extra step to test for compatibility, interoperability and ease of use.

So when you’re shopping for your next ATI Radeon™ graphics card, look for the ATI Eyefinity Technology logo. Before you buy dongles/displays/etc. to build your multi-display “Dream PC,” go to http://www.amd.com/eyefinity to find the hardware that will give you a premium experience.

In my next blog, I’ll give you an inside look into how we’re testing the latest games to make sure your ATI Eyefinity experience rocks!

Bruce Gasson, works in the technical group at AMD. His postings are his own opinions and may not represent AMD’s positions, strategies or opinions. Links to third party sites are provided for convenience and unless explicitly stated, AMD is not responsible for the contents of such links sites and no endorsement is implied.

1 ATI Eyefinity technology can support multiple displays using a single enabled ATI Radeon™ graphics card – the number of displays may vary by board design and you should confirm exact specifications with the applicable manufacturer before purchase. ATI Eyefinity technology works with games that support non-standard aspect ratios, which is required for panning across multiple displays. To enable more than two displays, additional panels with native DisplayPort™ connectors, and/or certified DisplayPort™ adapters to convert your monitor’s native input to your cards DisplayPort™ or Mini-DisplayPort™ connector, are required.

2 Bezel compensation is available only for sets of monitors that have pixel resolution and density within a 5% tolerance of each other
