Located in the Province of Québec, Université de Sherbrooke is a French-speaking institution that offers an academic education that is recognized and valued around the world. With a diverse student population, Université de Sherbrooke employs innovative teaching methods along with cutting-edge research technology. This technology now includes the fastest supercomputer in Canada: the Mammouth supercomputing cluster based on SGI® Rackable™ 2100 Series standard-depth servers, powered by AMD Opteron™ 6100 Series processors.

Excerpt:
AMD has long held a well-earned reputation for innovations with its industry changing processor technology. AMD Virtualization™ (AMD-V™) technology is a set of hardware extensions that optimize resource use, such as virtualization extensions to the x86 instruction set that enable software to more efficiently create virtual machines so that multiple operating systems and their applications can run simultaneously. And as the number of users grows, so does the need for memory; that’s why it is critical that AMD Opteron™ processors enable huge memory scalability and bandwidth.

Excerpt: AMD’s sponsorship of Scuderia Ferrari has evolved into a true technology partnership, with both companies working to continually improve performance and to go further, faster—year after year.

“As a top team we have to take advantage of every available technology and our user experience has changed accordingly. It is important to underline the fact that AMD has always respected the roadmap of their technologies, which makes it possible for us to count on the timeliness of their products. So when they promise to come out with the next generation of multi-core technology, higher frequency CPUs, or energy efficient solutions, we are able to plan accordingly,” says Grossi.

But the relationship between Ferrari and AMD is about much more than sharing physical resources. Both companies embrace a commitment to excellence, a desire to push the boundaries of performance, and a culture of collaboration.

Excerpt: A team led by mechanical engineers Joseph Oefelein and Jacqueline Chen of Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) simulates turbulent combustion at different scales. A burning flame can manifest chemical properties on small scales from billionths of a meter up to thousandths of a meter, whereas the motion of an engine valve can exert effects at large scales from hundredths of a meter down to millionths of a meter. This multiscale complexity is common across all combustion applications — internal combustion engines, rockets, turbines for airplanes and power plants, and industrial boilers and furnaces.

Dr. Jeffrey Skolnick, Director for the Center for the Study of Systems Biology, came to Georgia Tech in 2006 to conduct compute-intensive research with the assistance of HPC in the field of drug discovery. With the existing cluster reaching the end of a lifecycle, the university faced several challenges including limited space and a fixed power and cooling budget. GTI ultimately chose an HPC solution designed by Penguin Computing, featuring Six-Core AMD Opteron™ processors for their research.

This simulation technology will provide access to vital earthquake motion data – a resource that will enable nations to access the potential impact of extreme magnitude earthquakes in their own regions.
