What Would You Do With 48 Cores?

Well, you might get your chance to show us.

The AMD Server team is kicking March off with a new contest.  We are seeking your best essays, videos, or blog posts documenting how you might use 48 cores.  One winner will be selected and awarded with:

  • Four new AMD Opteron™ processors Model 6174, 12-core (2.2 GHz)
  • TYAN S8812 motherboard: the motherboard is a Tyan S8812 that features 4 processor sockets with the capacity for you to install up to 8 DIMMs per socket
  • one copy of Windows Server® 2008

Approximate retail value of all prizes is $8,189 USD.

For those of you living under a rock – or working away in the depths of the data center – the AMD Opteron 6100 series processors are 8- and 12-core processors that feature an incredible four channels of DDR-3 memory.  That’s 33% more channels than expected competing Intel products* and more than double the memory throughput of our existing products.** These are the first 8- and 12-core x86 processors in the market and you could be one of the first to have such a historic product in your hands.

We’re planning to introduce these processors this quarter and we want to make sure that you get your opportunity to showcase how great your ideas are.    Tell us what you can do with 48 cores to make the world a better, more interesting place, delivering the top performance or optimizing power.  Of course creativity will be awarded, so don’t be afraid to show the fun side of servers.

So how do you get your shot?  It’s easy.  Here are the simple rules:

  1. Submit your idea about what you would do with 48 cores by:
    1. Writing an essay (no more than 500 words); or
    2. Creating a You Tube video (no longer than 3 minutes) and sending us your link; or
    3. Writing a blog (no more than 500 words) and sending us your link

Here’s a tip: playing World of Warcraft faster than anyone is probably not going to get you the good stuff.  Think about what you can do to help society, to help others. That will give you an edge.

  1. Submit your entry and valid email address through the “What Would You Do With 48 Cores?” Contest entry form before Wednesday, March 24, 2010, @ at 11:59 p.m. EDT.
  2. Sit back and wait to see whether you have won.  We’ll be announcing the winner on or before April 15th.

It’s really that easy.  We’ll be reviewing all of the submissions and the team will choose the one that best exemplifies the spirit of 48 cores changing the world.

    Man, If I had 48 cores, I would be an apple FANATIC. My only question is how to keep them from turning brown. Maybe a 120 mm fan…. with lights! ;~)

    if i could own it for a day, i would use it to test all of my AI algorithms on HAIKU OS :D

    Actually that configuration is very useful for simulation of huge models. Having the experience in auto industry (in developing controls for hybrid transmissions) and aerospace (Environmental Control System) , one could deduct the current state of hardware/software is not adequate for simulation of huge systems. That is why they try to simulate on rapid prototyping systems using Hardware-in-the-loop. What AMD is offering, combined with the parallel processing power of new software, including MATLAB/SIMULINK and Visual Studio 2010 can alleviate the need for specialized hardware; everything can be simulated on a general purpose computer.
    I would make an start up company and use this system to provide service for auto/aerospace industry for their simulation needs.

    Cemal :If i have 48 cores then i ll buy a new motherboard and GPU and Ram .After i ll work for 1×48=48 cores because now best amd 4×12=48 cores .I want make a new operating system.Because Windows,Mac,linux and others not best for me.

    48 cores cpu….wonderful operations… I do use the Applied Mathematical Physics,astrophysic and Great Integral Equations..

    What this would be best for is a sensitive function of how the memory bandwidth is allocated, and cache structure. It would probably stink pretty badly if all 48 cores were doing completely different things non locally in different memory areas, so you’d want to throw this at problems that have some memory locality to avoid the inevitable bandwidth limits. Some neural net class problems would probably be very good with this, and some other things that are “sort of” parallel in nature, but not too much so. For example, handling having one chip write to memory that’s in another chip’s cache would slow things down a bit to keep memory in sync. So in a 4 chip machine, you might want to think of what can I do on a by chip-basis, for example, and want a scheduler in the opsys that would also take this into account (I could write one for linux that would, but closed source you’re stuck with what the vendor gives you and so far, I’m not real happy with anything commonly available).

    I will use 48 cores for AI. With a self learning system, i will track 48 different people behaviours. And it will be a decision support system. It will always calculate conditions like 48 different human.
    System will create virtual humans. And those virtual humans will act like reals. They will learn themselves. System will always calculate all probablities for different conditions.
    And virtual characters will be system user’s friend. So for example, system user can ask their opinion for weather condition, football match scores, fashion…
    System will learn via video, sound, internet activites or asking questions…
    So at the end we can also this virtual characters for robots :)

    As a programmer and an adept of making everything easier, I’d develop the most extensive web calculator available on internet. Making it possible to do about everything any TI-83 could do but available to all on internet. Even the graphic capabilities, of course. All the picture generating and big number calculation would eat huge amount of CPU and RAM so i think that would be an awesome project that would benifit from that amount of cores and memory bandwidth.

    No doubt that I would simply stare and drool while thanking the gods of AMD for such a wonderful Gift.

    It shall be used as the worlds more expensive PC. It shall sit by my desk with four custom built Phase Change coolers mounted to each processor. If it would be possible I’d attempt to have 1TB of memory.

    Such a computer is far beyond my needs, so I shall exploit it and use it for nothing more then a Game of Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance.
