NorthScale and Horizontal Data Scaling

by Jason Deal

The real beauty and utility of the cloud is the ability to scale resources up and down based on need.  Whether organizations contract with outside cloud providers or create an internal server cluster with all of the same advantages, flexibility is the key benefit.  With this flexibility comes a variety of challenges, one of them is knowing what to do with the associated data.

NorthScale creates software solutions that bring the same powerful elasticity of the cloud to the data framework.  Membase, for example, is a simple, fast, elastic key-value database for storing data behind interactive web applications.  The basic idea behind the software is that it allows users to scale data out, not up, providing cost, scalability and performance advantages. We recently caught up with James Phillips, Co-Founder and Senior Vice President of Products at NorthScale, and learned a little bit more about elastic data management, the NoSQL movement and a few of his predictions for the cloud.
