[12 Days of 12 Core] Day 3: 12 Cores in the Press

by Julie Lass

It’s time for Day 3 of the 12 Days of 12 Core.

While, at AMD, we have been excited to see the impact of our AMD Opteron server platforms have had on the industry, we realize it’s important others believe in our vision as well. Here is a snapshot of what the media have been saying this year:

“AMD’s Magny Cours series offers more cores, more memory, and, in most instances, lower pricing than its Intel Westmere-EP counterpart. We believe these advantages will enable AMD to maintain momentum with price-sensitive customers as well as with customers that require higher memory content per box” – Christopher Danely and Venk Nathamuni, Barron’s

“The biggest benefit, though, for small and medium businesses may be the price tag rather than the processing horsepower. Intel’s Xeon six-core Xeon processors cost nearly three times more than AMD’s 12-core Opterons. Even if the AMD only matched the Xeon’s six cores and provided no other benefits, the fact that the Opteron is a third of the price of the Xeon is reason enough for cost-conscious businesses to look at AMD.” – Tony Bradley, PC World

“Everyone is hyper-excited about netbooks, tablets, smartphones, phablets, and blah blah blah. We couldn’t care less about that noise, because in 2011, we’re going to see an epic battle between AMD’s new CPU, code-named Bulldozer, and Intel’s Sandy Bridge and Sandy Bridge E procs.” – Maximum PC Staff

“There is no such thing as the last laugh in the server chip business. But you can get the next laugh, and Advanced Micro Devices thinks it is going to get that sequential chuckle on rival Intel in the x64 server racket with next year’s launch of the “Bulldozer” family of Opteron processors” – Tim Prickett-Morgan, The Register

“When considered in the context of other very wide SMT designs from IBM and Intel, Bulldozer is actually a conservative, evolutionary step forward from what has gone before. In the world of processor design, evolution is always a lot better than revolution. It’s the radical designs that fail to live up to expectations while more conservative, incremental approaches tend to win out in the end.” – Jon Stokes, Ars Technica

What has caught your attention most in the server industry this year, and what are you most looking forward to in 2011? Give us your thoughts in the comments section, and remember – keep an eye out for clues in the blog posts (bold, underlined word) for all 12 days of 12 core to win a Toshiba Satellite A505D-S6987 laptop.
