AMD Opteron™ 6200 Series Processors Answer the Need for Yet More Cores
In High-Performance Computing (HPC), we have many applications that are routinely operating at the scale of 100s to 1,000s of threads, and increasingly some are moving into the 10,000s of threads. The next decade will be marked by more applications and thus more science operating at levels of scale that were not common in the last decade. Threads need cores on which to run, and processors with more cores mean more threads can run in a single socket versus spread between multiple sockets, bringing down cost and increasing density of compute resources.
